It is always a fashion designer’s task to identify an inspiration and incorporate it into his/her own aesthetic. Getting out of the box and setting the next fashion trend can be daunting for some designers, but the truth is, not only that it sets them apart from the commercial and mainstream designing but it also hone their skills and experience which in turn reflect their maturity and a larger scale influence.

For someone who just started in fashion design, Melai Annang has already the goods and the guts of pushing the envelope with her eccentricity and vintage inspirations and turning them into a high fashion and tasteful declaration. Her “crazy” ideas may be outrageous to some but as a fashion designer it is better to give out an explosion than a total snooze-fest.

At the official press launch, as Melai walked to the runway and was introduced together with her first challenge look and model, I remember uttering to myself “What the hell is she wearing?” as I bring down my camera and stopped taking pictures. I wasn’t looking at the model, I was looking at Melai. Of course I didn’t mean it really, really bad, surprisingly it was a good reaction from me and I instantly got to discern her character and personality, just based on her style.
